Some people fear persecution in their country of origin because of their sexual orientation and/or gender identity (SOGI). They can apply for asylum for this reason. These individuals are referred to as “SOGI applicants”. From the beginning of the procedure, the asylum authorities verify the credibility of the applicant’s sexual orientation and/or gender identity, as well as the credibility of the fears invoked. It is therefore crucial that they receive proper guidance from the beginning of this asylum procedure.
For this reason, NANSEN has developed two fact sheets to support individuals accompanying SOGI applicants during the asylum procedure in Belgium.
- The first fact sheet, entitled “Preparing SOGI applicants for the asylum procedure in Belgium”, contains points of attention for all persons who accompany SOGI applicants in the asylum procedure. The aim is, in particular, to support these intermediaries in:
- Informing SOGI applicants about the asylum procedure.
- Equipping SOGI applicants to deal with specific challenges they may encounter.
- Supporting applicants in presenting their asylum narrative.
- The second fact sheet, entitled “Evidence in the asylum procedure for SOGI applicants”, addresses, in particular, the collection of evidence and the nature of such evidence in the context of international protection procedures based on sexual orientation and/or gender identity.
The fact sheets are available in three languages: English, French and Dutch.
Please note that the fact sheets will be updated regularly. Always download the most recent version.
These fact sheets have been created as part of the WAWY project. For more information about this project, see here. For any questions: contact NANSEN or the other WAWY project partners.
